AGM and panel discussion on Access to Justice in Alberta

On Thursday June 19th, UNAC Calgary hosted our annual general meeting at the Kahanoff Conference Centre .  This year, we began our event with a special guest panel discussing Access to Justice in Alberta. Our guest speakers included:

  • Susan Billington, Q.C. Policy and Program Counsel, Law Society of Alberta
  • Margaret Keelaghan Senior Managing Counsel, Calgary Legal Guidance
  • Sarah Burton Research Lawyer, Alberta Civil Liberties Research Centre – University of Calgary


 Human Rights Day/AGM

On Tuesday, December 10, 2013, UNAC- Calgary commemorated Human Rights Day at the John Dutton Theater in the Calgary Central Public Library. The evening was kicked off by Phil Ponting, Chair of UNA- Canada discussing all their great work for 2013, and was followed by three-time Amnesty International award winner, Sally Armstrong who gave a memorable presentation on Human Rights & Human Wrongs, Who in the World Cares. Festivities continued with a lively Bollywood dance performance by Soul Feet Dance Productions and an inspiring freestyle performance by Hip Hop emcee Rebecca Dawn. The evening finished off with our 2012 AGM.

Taste of Cultures

As in previous years, we attended Forest Lawn’s Public Library’s < > 6th Annual Taste of Culture celebration. In support of celebrating cultures in our great city, we participated in the successful annual event and were honored to taste cuisine, and watch amazing song and dance performances from around the world.

World Water Day

In March, UNAC- Calgary teamed up with Hope2Opportunity and the U of C’s Office of Sustainability to host events in recognition of the United Nations’ World Water Day.  There was an interactive theme to the week during which students got to enjoy games, win prizes and learn from water sustainability experts.

The UN has acknowledged an international day to celebrate fresh water for twenty years, and 2013 also happens to be the International Year of Water Cooperation.

The Inaugural Kenneth & Patricia Mariash Global Issues Dialogue

This innovative annual series convened distinguished global-thought leaders with academia, government, civil society and the private sector to explore the horizon of emergent issues of importance to Canada and the world.
Keynote speaker Helen Clark, Administrator of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) presented on the increasingly powerful and innovative role of the private sector in international development and the challenges and opportunities for Canada presented by emerging global trends.


UN Day

On October 24, 2012 UNAC- Calgary celebrated UN Day with Martha McManus who presented us with an inspiring message on peace and conflict resolution. Martha is a peace and conflict transformation specialist who has worked with UNICEF in Iraq, Sri Lanka and the Great Lakes Region of Africa. She holds three master’s degrees in counseling psychology, peace studies & philosophy, and studying trauma & resilience with Canadian peacekeepers.
