The United Nations Flag was raised today at Calgary City Hall in observation of Human Rights Day– a day that commemorates the United Nations General Assembly’s adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1948.

“On human rights day we speak out, we denounce authorities that  deny the rights of any persons or group … we declare that human rights are for everyone”, states Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon in this Youtube video released earlier today:

This year’s theme is Human rights 365 to encompass the idea that Human Rights is important issue every day of the year. United Nations launched a Vine campaign that lets you post a six-second video stating why you think human rights matter. Find out more about this initiative on the UN’s Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights page.

Locally, United Nations Association in Canada, Calgary Branch will be commemorating Human Rights Day by supporting Ten Thousand Villages–  a Fair Trade Organization committed to creating opportunities for artisans in developing countries to earn income.

Join us between 6PM and 8PM tonight, December 10th, at their Crowchild Trail location (220 Crowchild Trail NW) and enjoy light snacks and a short presentation of Ten Thousand Villages and the positive work and relationships they contribute to globally. 15 % of all purchases made tonight will be donated to our organization.
