A Calgary family wants to raise awareness of the crisis in Yemen after their Father, Dr. Abdulkader Al-Guneid, was kidnapped on August 5th.
It is easy to forget the situation in Yemen because it is a crisis 12,000 kilometers away from Calgary. But it has hit too close to home for Calgarian Nagwan Al-Guneid. Nagwan’s father, Dr. Abdulkader Al-Guneid, a prominent physician and a media voice of Taiz, the third largest city of Yemen, was abducted by eight Houthi armed militants. The militants looted the house and dragged out Al-Guneid barefoot in front of his wife. To this date, his whereabouts remain unknown.

On August 19th 2003, the United Nations Headquarters in Baghdad, Iraq was bombed. This attack claimed the lives of 22 people and is considered one of the deadliest attacks ever directed at the UN. In 2008, the UN General Assembly designated August 19th as World Humanitarian Day in honor of the people who risk their lives providing humanitarian assistance worldwide.
The theme for World Humanitarian Day 2015 is ‘Inspiring The World’s Humanity’. The United Nations invites individuals around the world to join any humanitarian organization near them and promote the message of humanity by taking a social action and sharing it on social networks using the hashtag #ShareHumanity.
“In a world that is ever more digitally connected, each of us has the power and responsibility to inspire our fellow human beings to act to help others and create a more humane world.”
Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon
